The introduction of goal-line technology appears all but inevitable after Fifa’s president, Sepp Blatter, said it is “a necessity” in the wake of Ukraine being denied an equaliser in the 1-0 defeat to England. Blatter, who hopes to convince the game’s rule-makers – the International Football Association Board – to give technology the green light, posted on Twitter: “After last night’s match #GLT is no longer an alternative but a necessity.”
Until now, Michel Platini, Uefa’s president, has been adamant that decisions must be made by officials that now number five. But their horror at seeing England benefit from the human error will now force football’s luddite presidents to think again. We’re very glad to see Blatter isn’t restricting his new love of technology to his personal use of Twitter.
