Club Brugge coach George Leekens sports a cheeky paisley silk scarf against Newcastle

There was only one real contender for last night’s Dandiest Man At St James’ Park competition. Club Brugge coach George Leekens blew the competition out of the water by wearing a paisley scarf in the dugout during his side’s Europe League defeat to Newcastle.

The only disappointment was that ESPN didn’t play a little snippet of Soul Bossa Nova every time they featured Leekens on camera.

The Belgian’s choice of scarf grew criticism from noted clothes horse Gordon Strachan, who pondered during ITV’s highlights coverage who had let Leekens leave the house wearing it.

We suspect he discovered the hard way that Tyneside in autumn is more suited to cashmere than silk.

(With apologies that you’ll now be whistling Soul Bossa Nova all day.)
