Manchester United’s really long Stretford End scarf

This photograph reportedly shows a scarf that once stretched from one end of Manchester United’s Stretford End to the other.

United fan Barry Millard, who uploaded the picture, says it was “said to be the longest scarf in football” when it made its matchday appearances in the 1960s.

On a related issue, does anyone go to the game in their Savile Rogue and a crash helmet? If so, please send us a photo!

We wonder whether the gent pictured simply didn’t want to hold his headgear after arriving at Old Trafford on two wheels or if this was a defence against missiles lobbed by opposition fans.
