The scarf presentation is a grand transfer tradition.
You snap-up your team’s new signing, make him hold a scarf above his head and snap a few photos. Everyone’s happy.
The taste of the scarf being used is often questionable, but rarely quite so questionable as when Italian side Roma unveiled Michel Bastos this week.
The Al Ain player, brought in on loan until the end of the season, posed with a scarf in Roma colours bearing the slogan ‘Lazio Merda’ or ‘Lazio Sh*t’.
Roma have since apologised, insisting that the decision to bring their local rivals into proceedings was not a conscious one.
They said: “Bastos has shown a scarf thrown by the fans without knowing the message it had. The club and Michel would like to apologise for what took place.”
