Founder of Supporters Direct, Brian Lomax, dies

The founding father of supporter activism sadly died this week. Brian Lomax was the vision and drive behind fans across the UK taking a stake in the ownership of their clubs. Supporters Direct helped the ownership of clubs like Portsmouth, Exeter City and Wycombe Wanderers pass into the hands of their fans. In total 40 football and rugby clubs are now supporter-owned, providing a sustainable route that helps avoid the false hopes and horrors that investor-owners bring.

Leeds United fans, who have suffered more than most from a succession of tin-pot owners, are currently preparing a bid for their club. If successful they would become the biggest supporter-owned club in Britain, an inspiration for other clubs to follow and a fitting legacy for Lomax. We wish them luck.
