Safe Standing – time to introduce it

As football match atmospheres become more sterile and prices too high for many ordinary fans, it seems ridiculous that safe standing is still banned by the English government and the FA. Not only is standing already happening (without safety rails) at most Premiership and Championship games, but safe standing been working impeccably for years in Germany. Scottish teams will be introducing it in 2016.

The Football Supporters Federation (FSF), who represent 500,000 fans in England and Wales, are leading the campaign for safe standing at all grounds. They stress that ‘safe standing’ does not mean a return “to the dark days of the 1980s with vast, crumbling terraces and lethal fences”, but would instead mean the introduction of innovative ‘rail seats’, which can transform a seating area into a standing area in seconds.

Take a look at the FSF site. Write to your MP, your club, your local paper or just add your name to the growing list of supporters, but let’s hope 2016 sees a breakthrough from this daft situation where you aren’t allowed to watch a football match standing up.
