Get ready for Super League 2019

Big changes are coming to Super League in 2019.

After 4 years, the Super8 format is being replaced. The old format saw 23 games played after which the league was split. Whereas the new format now sees 12 Super League teams play each other home and away, with an additional sixth fixture and the Magic Weekend. The Magic Weekend is a Rugby Football League-organised event wherein, over the course of a weekend, an entire Super League round of matches are played at a single stadium.

As well as the changes to the format, Super League matches will also feature Golden Point extra time, shot clocks and several other changes with the aim to introduce more speed and action for fans to enjoy.

Golden Point extra time will be played if the scores are level at full-time, with two five-minute periods in which to determine a winner. Whilst the shot clocks are being introduced to reduce the number and length of stoppages in matches, which will ensure more action with the ball in play.

Super League’s chief executive, Robert Elstone promises that this is only the start: “Super League will be different in 2019, that’s for sure. But you’ll see a much better-looking competition in 2020 and the years after that. That’s a guarantee.”

The season kicks off with Grand Final Winners, Wigan Warriors, facing rivals St Helens on Thursday 31st January. The opening weekend also features the Hull derby, before 2018 Grand Finalists Warrington the face Leeds.
