3 of the most inspirational female footballers

The 2019 Women’s World Cup achieved an impressive TV audience of 17.2 million people – which were record viewing figures on TV. Many young girls, boys and adults were inspired by the high quality of the women’s game. The tournament changed how people viewed the sport and hopefully inspired future generations to come, some having previously only seen it as a man’s game.

So who are the most inspirational female footballers? Here is our list of 3 of the best candidates:

1. Megan Rapinoe – Co-captain of Team USA

33-year-old Megan scored the first goal in the Women’s World Cup Final between the US and the Netherlands. As well as winning the World Cup, she was named Player of the Tournament and overall Top Scorer. Known for her bright pink-purple hair, she came out in 2012 and supports various LGBT organisations. A gay icon, she is a strong advocate for equality. She divides opinion but we love her. She is one to watch.

2. Steph Houghton – England captain

The 30-year-old England and Manchester City defender has played at international and domestic level. The Lioness says she was inspired to become a player by David Beckham. She is an ambassador for UEFA Women’s Football and hopes other young girls will get into women’s football too. She led England to fourth place, just missing out on a bronze medal. Steph definitely deserves a place on our list.

3. Marta Vieira de Silver – Brazilian striker

Known simply as Marta, the 32-year-old is at the top of her game having won Best Female at the Best FIFA Awards an impressive six times. She has been called an “Inspiration to women players across the globe”. She plays for Orlando Pride in the US and was discovered when she was only 14 years old. With 17 goals, Marta holds the record for the most goals scored at FIFA World Cup tournaments. In 2016, she carried the Olympic flag in the Olympic Games in Rio. Marta is a real example of a great female leader – her career shows no signs of slowing and we hope she carries on playing for years to come.
